Who are we?
The Association for Training in Emergency Situations – UVSAR Galati was established to address the issue of international cooperation between non-governmental organizations with the main objective of saving lives.
The role of the organisation is to build platforms, implement projects following the European model and create a non-governmental structure complementary to state institutions for emergency response, to respond both nationally and internationally.
UVSAR is currently equipped with an intervention technique in accordance with the standards in force, with individual equipment for 100 people and 3 intervention vehicles. The Association for Training in Emergency Situations – UVSAR Galati also trained over 3000 people in first aid and first response in emergency situations with the help of its partners Nilufer Aramă Kurtarma and URSA Turkey.
The International Disaster Emergency Response Network (IDERN) currently has members from the European Union, Turkey and China, and by the end of 2024 will have 20 partner organisations with major disaster response capabilities.
IDERN’s aim is to provide emergency assistance in cooperation with IDERN members to any major international risk event and to establish relationships between NGOs whose mission is to save lives.
IDERN’s main role is to organize annual emergency training sessions under the banner INTERNATIONAL SEARCH AND RESCUE DAYS, exercises that aim to highlight the intervention capacity of IDERN members and to help improve techniques and response times in the event of disasters or calamities.
COVID-19 and the pandemic period
During the pandemic period generated by the new Coronavirus, UVSAR Galati has set up a monitoring centre for people under quarantine and isolation at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Volunteers kept in touch with hundreds of people in Galați in this situation and passed on the information to the county authorities. In the immediate aftermath, UVSAR continues to help people in need by allocating food through its partners.
Between 01.03.2020 – 25.05.2020, UVSAR provided humanitarian assistance and logistical support to approximately 3600 people in Galati County.
War in Ukraine and the refugee crisis
Following the war in Ukraine, UVSAR Galati took care of the refugees from the very beginning, offering them temporary rooms in the C dormitory on the student campus, medical support, hot food, almost everything necessary for a comfortable living, under the partnership and supervision of the University of Galati.
We managed to provide them with all the necessary food for both children and adults, clothes, hygiene products, some of which were stored with the help of our volunteers in the gym in dormitory D, but we also supplied some rooms in dormitory C with different products such as Room 001 with hygiene products for all ages, Room 002 with food and fridge, Room 003 a local pharmacy and Room 004 with breakfast products.
UVSAR Galati has provided volunteer translators to help us communicate more easily with refugees on any medical or other issues. But we didn’t stop there.
In June, with the support of Mobile Medics International, the UVSAR team came up with the initiative to make expeditions as often as possible to Ukraine to help hospitals with medical supplies, to give a helping hand to doctors who are struggling, to cope with the current situation and be in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and also to train civilians and military personnel on the use of military-grade first aid equipment.
We also provided transport to Isaccea for those who wanted to return home or to the train station to go on to Bucharest. After these expeditions we realized how serious the situation is and we decided to continue to help because this is our goal towards people, to prevent them from more difficult situations and to provide them with a healthy living environment.
To this end, we are currently developing a mobile command centre for expeditions to Ukraine, the most necessary technical equipment to provide rapid accommodation in tents and at the same time to provide all the individual technical equipment to our staff in the operational area.
